Love What You Do... Do What You Love

Truer words could not be spoken. After developing and designing web sites now for around 5 years, I must say it is really awesome. And not just one aspect of it, the whole shebang. From the early stages of planning the site's objectives, all the way through debugging that script that contains a typo that is destroying what sanity you have left.

If done right, no two websites are the same. The web and the technologies that power it are changing constantly. As soon as I think I may have mastered a certain technique, a new better and more efficient way comes along and I have to learn all over again. But it usually builds on something I am already familiar with, so it's not that bad, plus it builds my toolbox a little larger and that is always a good thing and keeps web site design and fun and challenging business to be in.

Frameworks seem to be everywhere and are being used by several very respected developers, and even some top notch highly successful companies. Frameworks can be good and bad. The good side of frameworks lies in their ability to cut development time, and simplify a number of tasks. The bad side is that if not used properly can make development even harder for a developer that isn't proficient in the language the framework is dealing with. If I do not know how write PHP code effectively and I am using a framework. Chances are I don’t understand what the program is doing, therefore making debugging a daunting task. Not only do I have to search PHP documentation trying to understand what the program is doing, I also have to search the framework documentation to understand how the framework is using the PHP code. That process can get messy in a hurry.

With frameworks cutting development time and assisting in making some incredible web sites, the amount of graphic design that can be added to a web site now continues to improve. Sure, designer could always make breathtaking images with Photoshop and slice ‘em up. But now that browsers are starting to catch up with CSS, we can make those incredible looking web sites actually usable with fast download times.

All in all, it's a great time to be a web designer.
